Since the waiting list for a Driving Test is approximately 12 months at most Test Centres around the Country and not likely to reduce in the near future, then each Learner Driver should apply for the Test as soon as they get their Provisional License.

Booking can be done on-line at http://www.drivingtest.ie or by postal application to the Dept.of Transport, Driving Testing Section, Ballina, Co.Mayo.

You may choose which RSA Test Centre you wish to be tested at and this will depend on your Work or College location. Give some thought to your likely situation when your test will be coming up and then decide to have lessons in that location.

Having driving lessons in Dublin or other than the one you will be sitting your Test in can be counterproductive but not always avoidable. We are talking here about your initial learning curve of the first few months on the road. It’s a good idea to be getting well acquainted with your chosen location and get to know the particular level of traffic at different days and times of the week.

The advantage of this is that you will eventually be very familiar with all that is going on in the vicinity of your chosen Test Centre and this will not only give you confidence but will give you the skill to handle things well on the day. Not knowing your chosen location well is a recipe for disaster and it’s very important to get a good knowledge of the Traffic flows at particular times of day and the respective seasons. Knowledge of all of these variables can play a big part in achieving success on the day.
